Home Water Conservation Tips
Water is essential to life and that is why conserving water must concern every one of us. We must use water wisely so that future generations will still have fresh water to enjoy. Water conservation has a lot of benefits. By saving water you also save energy because the facilities that pump, deliver and treat water also consume a significant amount of fuel. By saving water you help these facilities conserve electricity and energy.
Conserving water also saves you money; if you use water wisely it will result to smaller water bills. Water pollution may also be prevented if you conserve water. If your home is connected to a sewage system, an overloaded sewage system can be avoided. Contamination of nearby lakes and streams can happen due to overflow of raw sewage. By conserving water you also help conserve the environment.
The right place to start a water conservation program is at home. The bathroom is where a large percentage of water is used. This is where you must begin your water conservation effort. Installing water saving devices such as quality faucets and shower heads will not only help you save up on water bills but also make you use water efficiently.
Shorter showers and not letting water run down the drain when filling the tub can significantly help you save up. Placing toilet dams or any water weight inside toilet tank can save water too. Use a waste basket for toilet paper, facial tissues and other wastes instead of flushing them down. Flushing those, will require a second round if the first one is not successful.
Leaks should be repaired immediately to minimize unnecessary water consumption. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving, a lot of water is wasted down the drain when you keep it on while you are busy with this daily routine.
After that shave, rinse razors by filling up the bottom of the sink with a few inches of water, by doing so you save at least three gallons per day.
In the kitchen, don’t let water run while washing fruits or vegetables, instead fill in the sink and wash fruits or vegetables this way. Run dishwashers on full load, it will be more efficient and you also save on dishwashing detergent. This also goes for washing machines, the more clothes you wash in one loading means a saving of water load over time. Use only the appropriate water-level when using the washing machine to avoid overflow during the washing operation.
Keep plenty of covered water containers inside the refrigerator for drinking. This way you reduce the number of times you open the faucet for a drink. Insulating water pipes also contributes to water conservation, by doing so you get hot water faster thereby reducing water wasted while waiting for the right water temperature.
Obviously, washing the car also uses a lot of water. Use a bucket when washing the car to avoid free flowing wasted water, or fit your hoses with auto shutters to stop the flow of water immediately.
When cleaning the lawn don’t hose down, use a broom. The early morning hours is the best time to water the lawn. Water loss due to evaporation is reduced because temperatures and wind speed are at its lowest during these hours. If it is allowed in your area, you can use “gray” water from tubs, basins or laundry to water the lawn. Using water wisely reduces waste, it helps you save money, and preserve the environment.
